About Vashon
Vashon sits in Puget Sound between West Seattle and the Kitsap Peninsula, close enough to the city to see it and far enough to feel nothing like it. There is no bridge — everything and everyone arrives by ferry — and the island has held onto its farms, its studios, its orchards and a stubbornly independent streak because of it.
Vashon town is the island's main village, and as the crow flies it is only about six and a half miles from our truck. The water in between is the whole story.
Honest note about the crossing
Vashon is inside our ten-mile radius measured in a straight line, but the line crosses open water. There is no bridge to the island — everything arrives on a Washington State Ferry, which makes a door-to-door delivery a very different proposition from the same distance on pavement.
So please start your order online and check what is offered for your address before you count on delivery, or call and we will tell you plainly what we can do. Pickup at the truck is always available, and for most islanders that is the simpler answer.
About the food truck
The kitchen on the mainland
On the Burien side of the water, José A. Vela and Selene Cuevas Dorantes run this truck with their family, cooking recipes that came from Tierra Colorada, in the municipality of Juan R. Escudero, Guerrero. It is the same handful of people every day.
Tortillas are handmade. Meat is your choice — pastor, asada, pollo, birria or chorizo, with tripa, cabeza and lengua available for an extra charge. Aguas frescas are poured fresh. It is the same food whether you are standing at the window in Burien or having it sent to Vashon.
What Vashon orders
Island orders tend to be planned rather than impulsive, which suits our weekend cooking. Tamales in banana leaves with chicken and pork, red and green sauce. Big trays of tacos. Aguas frescas — horchata, jamaica, pepino con limón — poured fresh before they go.
Worth building a trip around
Plenty of islanders order online and collect at the truck on their way back from a mainland errand. It is the surest way to get the food at its best, and the drive from the Fauntleroy boat is short.
