Taquería Vela is owned and run by José A. Vela, Selene Cuevas Dorantes and their family, working from recipes handed down in Tierra Colorada, in the municipality of Juan R. Escudero, Guerrero. Everything is cooked to order, never held.
Tortillas are handmade. Meat is your choice — pastor, asada, pollo, birria or chorizo, with tripa, cabeza and lengua available for an extra charge. Aguas frescas are poured fresh. It is the same food whether you are standing at the window in Burien or having it sent to Mercer Island.
What Mercer Island orders
Plates, mostly. Carne asada with rice, beans, guacamole, chili and onion. Enchiladas under sauce with crema and queso. Carnitas served with handmade tortillas. Food that is worth sitting down to rather than eating standing up.
